Austin and Brad - Washington DC Lifestyle Maternity Session

I met Austin and Brad in 2013 when they were first engaged. They were high school sweethearts madly in love, planning their wedding and dreaming of the future. Their engagements sessions in Alexandria, Virginia and Union Station in Washington DC were fun and vintage.

I was so surprised and excited when Austin reached out to me this year with the happy news that she was expecting their first child! I jumped at the chance to photograph this amazing couple again.

We photographed on a dreary, rainy Sunday in their light-filled row house, but he rain could not put a damper on the excitement of this mom-to-be. Using natural light, prompts and jokes, I tried to capture the sweet, quiet moments between Austin, Brad and their beautiful baby still in the womb.

Beth and Zach - Eastern Yacht Club Wedding

Beth and Zach were a pleasure from the very beginning. They made their wedding day truly theirs from the groomsmen traveling to the venue by boat, their sweet dog as ring bearer and a truly touching First Look. Their July wedding at the Eastern Yacht Club in Essex, Maryland was truly a dream.

Adorable Ways to Include a Pet in Your Wedding

For many, their first love was a pet. Those cuddles, kisses and words of endearment might now be shared with your fiancé, but you never forget your first love. There is no reason to, after all, because love multiplies, it does not divide. How then can you pay homage to both your pet and your soon-to-be spouse? You can include your fur baby in your wedding day! Here are some tips.

Announce your big news with your furry friend by your side. Include your cat, dog, bunny, iguana (maybe not the fish…) in your engagement session. Pro tip: bring a friend or family member to hold your lovable pet during the photos that only include you and your fiancé.

Get ready for the big day with your best friend. Get ready in the comfort of your own home so your curious cat can join in the festivities. Or bring your pupper to the hotel to help calm your nerves before the ceremony.

Make them a member of the wedding party. If your pup has a flair for the dramatic, why not make them a ring bearer? Dress them up in a swanky collar, or even a tux so they fit right in with your bridal party. Pro tip: use a pet care service on the day of your wedding. Natasha and Theron - Best Buy Engagement Session

Is your name Wi-fi? Because I'm really feeling a connection! All puns aside, Natasha and Theron found that connection in one of the most modern love stories I have ever heard. They met as employees in a Best Buy. They fell in love in a Best Buy. They got engaged in a Best Buy!

When they chose me as their wedding photographer I did not know much about their love story. But when they told me about falling in love as employees and their desire for an engagement session at Best Buy, I certainly could not say no. As you can imagine, it was a silly morning, with lots of love (and electronics).

Julia and Elliot - Monkton Engagement Session

I met Julia and Elliot at the Baltimore Wedding Expo and thought they were wonderful. Then I got the chance to meet their pupper and could not contain my happiness that I get to photograph this beautiful, funny couple!

For their engagement session, we met in Monkton, Maryland outside Millstone Cellars, which just so happens to be the spot Elliott proposed! We climbed on an antique fire engine, crouched in some tall grass and walked along the weathered oak boards of the old Monkton Train Station.

Of course, we could not forget about the fur baby, so we packed up and traveled to Julia's home where we were able to play in the stunning garden.

Kayla and Justin - Bowling Green Country Club Wedding

Kayla and Justin got married on a gorgeous fall day. Wispy clouds floated above the flowered covered wedding arch, and sunshine streamed across the faces of happy guests.

This couple was one of my most laid-back of the season, focusing on the happiness of the day, rather than the stress inducing details. But, don't discount the details! They had amazing flowers in every corner of the venue and beautiful personal touches that truly showed their love for one another. The Bowling Green Country never looked more romantic and happy.

Ramona and Gareth - Washington DC National Arboretum Engagement

Gareth and Ramona have a love story worthy of a novel. Ramona hails from Poland. While working as an Au Pair in the United States, her path crossed with Gareth. It was practically love at first site, they said. Over the next two years, they dated across continents and time zones. When Gareth proposed, Ramona never hesitated, but getting a United States Visa would be a challenge. For over a year, they filled out forms and filed paperwork. They never dared set a wedding date. Finally, Ramona received her Visa! Now the flurry of paperwork has become a flurry of wedding planning, as they have to be married within 90 days!

Gareth contacted me a few weeks before Ramona's flight landed in DC. He knew that she would want to celebrate their engagement, so he wanted to surprise her with a photo session! He choose Washington DC's National Arboretum as their backdrop, quite the quintessential location with the towering Corinthian Columns. I was excited to meet them both and hear more about their exciting love story!

The day was warm and gorgeous when we met in front of the columns. Unfortunately, they were under construction, the columns surrounded by bright orange fencing. Nothing deterred them, however. We took advantage of the weather and sunlight and first photographed among the Bonsai trees. We chatted as we walked to other beautiful locations, a grassy field, a cherry blossom tree, a marble fountain. They were so in love and excited to be together at last!

Senator Theatre Engagement - Courtney and Benjamin

The cherry red Chevy Impala pulled up to the curb. My heart revved along with the 8-cylnder engine.

It was a warm Fall day and the people of Baltimore were just waking up on an early Saturday morning. The Senator Theatre marque announced movies now playing...and the impending nuptials of Courtney and Benjamin. We photographed in the warm sun. My couple were dressed to kill in red plaid and a killer leather jacket, that complemented the theatre and Impala impeccably. The couple's daughter, sweet and outspoken, joined us for some cute family shots.

I was excited to photograph inside the classic Art Deco theater. We began at the stainless steel candy display, with its lights and bright colors, then made our way throughout the classic interior. In the screening room, Courtney and Benjamin displayed their acting chops. "You're watching a sweet film," I prompted as they looked at the dark screen. “Now it's horror " They aren't just pretty faces, fans. I sense an Oscar Nomination on the horizon.

We finished the session in the grand foyer, taking advantage of the architecture, colors and natural light. If how the couple relished the spotlight this much during just their engagement session, their June wedding is sure to be a box office smash!

Old Town Alexandria Engagement - Anton and Toni

It was a cold day in January. Our previous session attempt had been thwarted by single digit temperatures, but this day had promise. The sun was filtering warmly through the clouds, reflecting off the water of Alexandria’s harbor. Anton and Toni were adorable. Bundled in stylish, yet warm jackets, they were ready and willing to bare the cold and make some amazing photographs.

We began photographing along the docks, with small boats and the grand Cherry Blossom paddle boat as a backdrop. We chatted about Toni’s classroom (she is a 2^nd grade teacher), and their vision for their upcoming wedding day. I caught the light of the setting sun, as well as their smiles. We continued along the water, stopping at brick stairs behind the Torpedo Factory, and spending a good deal of time on one of the piers.

Old Town Alexandria is one of my favorite locations to photograph portraits, and no session is complete without posing on the amazing pre-revolution era cobble stones of “Captains Row”.

As the session came to an end, our fingers were growing colder. We popped into Pops Old Fashioned Ice Cream shop to warm up. The heart shaped chairs, checkerboard floor, and bright red doors made for an amazing backdrop as we said our goodbyes.

I cannot wait to photograph their wedding day in August of this year!

Hendry House Wedding - Vanna and Patrick

The day was warm and bright, almost as bright as Vanna's smile. Her wedding was planned to perfection, with personalized DIY details at every glance. A paper pinwheel photo booth backdrop graced the corner of the gleaming white tent. Pastel fabric pennants hung from the ceiling. Memories of their dating and engagement history were told through framed photographs. The ambiance was cheerful and full of homespun charm.

The ladies gathered in an upper room of the house, drinking champagne and doing their hair and makeup. The men, in a warm wood study. Friends, family and vendors, laughed as they set-up the reception and ceremony sites.

Vanna and Patrick saw each other for the first time, on a secluded walkway in the blooming garden. Patrick could hardly stand still, as he waited, back to his future bride. Vanna could not help but gasp and laugh when she saw him standing at the bottom of the stone steps. When he turned, however, it was Patrick's turn to gasp. After a few moments alone, we began to walk among the flowers around the grounds, photographing and laughing. The bridal party joined us shortly thereafter.

The ceremony took place on an expanse of vibrant green lawn. Patrick and Vanna were framed by a sculptured hedge as they exchanged rings and kissed for the first time as husband and wife.

The reception was lively, with heartfelt speeches, a dollar dance, and twirling circles of laughing guests.

Washington DC Champagne Wedding - Melissa and Grant

I met Melissa at her hotel room teeming with robed women, mimosas, and energy. It was her wedding day. The room was chaotic, as most wedding day hotel rooms are, but the bride was all smiles and laughter. She took time to include her flower girls and share special moments with each of her bridesmaids. Almost complete, her veil was placed in her hair and a silence fell over the room. It was time. She was gorgeous. The silence only lasted a few moments, however, as we boarded a bus and a toast was raised.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church was stunning even without adornment. I settled into place among the pews and waited for the reveal: the moment the groom sees his bride. Not being able to help herself, Melissa peeked around the corner of the entryway. The ceremony was classic and filled with tradition. With a kiss, they became man and wife, and after family photographs, you could tell Melissa and Ben were ready to celebrate. Again we boarded the bus, with immediate family in toe. At the Jefferson Memorial, the party hit full swing when the bride and groom shook and sprayed champagne along the shore of the tidal basin. The drops were bright in the sun and the laughter was heard all around the monument.

The night ended with music and laughter and family all around at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. What a beautiful day.

Hillsborough Vineyards Engagement - Katelyn and Jacob

It was a very warm October day in Purceville, Virginia. It seemed that Summer was refusing to give up its hold on the land. Even the leaves were refusing to turn to their brilliant reds and golds of Fall. Despite the lack of color, the view from Hillsborough Vineyards was breathtaking. A hazy glow covered the distant hills. The golden grasses swayed in a summer-like breeze. The grape vines, newly harvested, were still green with vibrant life. All around us, people enjoyed wine and cheese and chocolate. Soft music played.

I knew Katelyn and Jacob right away by their description of the exuberant German Shepard that bounded down the walkway. Young and careless, he almost upended a guest's wine glass, but who can harbor anger long against such a creature? We talked briefly about the weather, the wine, and made our introductions. The light was then perfect, so we began.

We photographed as we walked among the vines and grasses of the winery. Their dog joining us for brief moments. Katelyn and Jacob are a natural couple. Their love was evident as they comfortably posed on a blanket amongst the vines and trekked into the waist high grasses. Katelyn's beauty was magnified as Jacob twirled her through the foliage like it was already the first dance of their wedding day. I was sad when the light finally dipped behind the hills, but enough remained for a romantic toast to end a beautiful day.

Melissa and Ben - Evergreen Museum and Library, Baltimore

Melissa and Ben were a beautiful, and incredibly smart couple. They were referred to me by a past bride...who also happened to be their wedding planner! It was a fun reunion for me, that's for certain. Their wedding was classic, with a fusion of their backgrounds, handmade flowers and great food. The ceremony was to take place in the immaculate garden that day, but a torrential downpour put a damper on that plan. Instead, we had an intimate and joyous ceremony in the more rustic Carriage House. Despite the last minute changes, Melissa and Ben were nothing but smiles and anticipation. My favorite moments were the first look under the trees, and the Bride's reception speech to her friends, family and new husband. There was laughter and love all around.

Memorial Engagement - Washington DC

Emily and Peter contacted me for a sunrise engagement session at the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. I dream in sunrise photographs, so I was awake and excited with tea in hand! It was nearly silent on a Saturday morning, with the occasional dog walker and motivated jogger. In the solitude, I was able to enjoy the colorful sunrise, and the love of this newly engaged couple. In the end, I am in love with warm morning light, contrasted by the cool stone. What a day!
